Alright, so I have recently been turned on to Filson products, and before dropping $400 on the Tin Cloth pants I've been wanting, I decided to try out their Tin Cloth "Packer" hat. My first impression was a little disappointing, as I was expecting a nice fitted box one would expect from a company that takes pride in it's products and aims to impress it's customers (as I had seen others receive their same hats on YouTube videos), I received a... Smashed hat in a plastic bag, in a mailing envelope. OK, fine. The hat is supposed to stand up to years of use and abuse, I can get past the stupid Apple-esque presentation experience. I look stupid in all hats, I only bought this thing to keep the rain off of my head and face. I was satisfied with the overall construction and material quality. Before wearing, I thoroughly applied Otter Wax fabric wax (fabric water treatment) and just started using it outside the last couple days. My only real gripe is that, while trying to rub off some excess wax from the (leather?) decorative band (and with considerable care, I might add), the part where the band overlaps itself has what at first appeared to be a stitch fastening it to itself and/or the hat. This came loose, revealing that the stitch fastened nothing, it was either decorative or failed to pass through the material behind it (benefit of the doubt, it looks entirely decorative). It was glued, so that's what was actually attaching it to itself and the actual hat beneath. I had read other reviews of people stating that their bands were not stitched at all and only glued, so I was immediately skeptical, but checked and did verify that the other stitches do appear to actually be functional and pass through and fasten the band to the hat material. So... I'll super-glue the liberated band terminal back to itself and hope that holds better than the (what looks to be) originally hot-glued factory solution and hope for a better hold. In fact, I might just dig out the sewing kit and do it correctly and not rely on hope...Aside from that unpleasantness, the last few days of daily chores outside in the drenching rain were considerably less unpleasant with my head, face AND ears remaining appreciably dry, so all considered, I'm still happy with the hat, and the $50 price tag is so far justified.
